World Water Day

Today is “World Water Day,” and international effort is focused on highlighting sustainable resource management. World Water Day was initially conceived in 1992 as part of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro. By 1993, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution designating March 22nd as “World Day for Water.” Each year a different theme is highlighted: For 2011, World Water Day’s theme is “Water For Cities: Responding to the Urban Challenge.”

There are many ways to get involved in World Water Day. You can log on to World Water Day’s official website for more information or find out how to participate via water.org or the Unicef tap project. And while the official celebration will be held in Cape Town South Africa from March 20-March 22nd, you can find local activities via this interactive map.
